I devoted more than four decades to medicine as a physician, surgeon, teacher, and academic leader. Specializing in neurotology and skull base surgery, I cared for patients with disorders of hearing and balance at the University of Virginia and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where I also helped train the next generation of physicians and surgeons.  I retired as Distinguished University Professor and Chair Emeritus at MUSC.

Alongside my medical career, I faithfully led Bible studies and founded a surgical mission outreach in the Dominican Republic. For more than thirty years, I served on medical mission teams there and in Bolivia, combining my commitment to medicine with my Christian faith.

Throughout my professional life, I came to appreciate both the remarkable capabilities and the limitations of medicine. Medicine can diagnose, treat, and often cure. Yet the deeper questions of meaning, purpose, suffering, hope, and faith reach beyond the boundaries of science.

Those questions—and the enduring truths of Scripture—have increasingly shaped my writing. I write from the conviction that God’s Word continues to speak with relevance, wisdom, and hope to the circumstances of everyday life.

My first book, A Legacy of Listening, grew out of several years of reflection and writing. It was created to encourage readers to develop a more consistent practice of Scripture reading, prayer, and thoughtful reflection, while also serving as a lasting spiritual legacy to inspire future generations.

I live in Charleston, South Carolina, with my wife, Debbie.  I enjoy reading, sports, and travel, and still play weekly games of basketball and tennis. Together, Debbie and I enjoy traveling and spending time with our three children and grandchildren.

I am currently writing a collection of essays exploring faith, life, medicine, and the lessons gathered over a lifetime, as well as a book exploring what it means to “pray without ceasing.”

Drawing on decades of medicine, Christian service, and family life, I hope my writing will encourage readers to know Christ more deeply, listen more closely to God's Word, and leave a lasting spiritual legacy for future generations.
